Stuff the gym!

By: Simon Dainton

Whether you like it or not, gym culture has become a firm part of our society these days, instilled into us as a must if we want any hope of avoiding obesity, staving off illness or looking as good as the models and actors we see on TV and in the magazines. These days there’s a huge pressure for us to conform to a specific look, yet our food and working hours are doing nothing to help. Gyms are making a tidy profit based on our guilt.

As a nation we are now the least active we have ever been, yet it seems like we spend half our lives at work! 50 or 60 years ago, our grandparents would have been fit as fiddles, working in jobs that required plenty of movement, activity and calorie burning. Nowadays most jobs entail plugging you into a computer terminal and sitting you there sedentary for 8-10 hours a day.

As a result, our nation’s waistlines are expanding by the minute. Most people hold a gym membership but they never go. They start out with good intentions, but the pressures of everyday life take over, and exercise becomes an afterthought of ‘well I should do some, but I don’t have the time’.

The real reason most people don’t commit to their gym memberships is due to a lack of results. They get given a generic induction and maybe a program, but then they’re left to fend for themselves in an environment that is both alien and unenjoyable to the average person. Although many gym goers are surrounded by other people striving to lose weight just like them, most feel quite alone as they solider on.

Let’s face it. Unless you love exercise or have a gym buddy, the gym can be an unexciting and soulless place. People keep to themselves, no one seems to share information and no one ever seems to get given any advice about nutrition, the one thing most people need to lose weight!

People are looking for alternatives that offer more fun and greater fulfilment, and that’s where Fitness Boot Camps seem to work so well. They allow gym members to escape the confines of those 4 walls, get away from the pumping music that most people can’t stand and mix with other like-minded, sociable people who are all in the same boat; wanting to get fit and lose weight as quickly as possible.

Boot Camp helps build friendships and camaraderie among members. Boring gym routines become a thing of the past as people start to work together in teams, completing challenges and playing games that take them back to their youth. Boot Camp works, not only because it offers highly effective exercise, but because it offers it in a fun and friendly package that allows people to feel like part of a social club rather than just being another number on a gym’s membership list.

What’s more, Boot Camp gives people the freedom to exercise outdoors in the fresh air. Every session is different, there’s no need to spend hours on treadmills or bikes, and time flies because you’re constantly on the move, immersed in the light-hearted competitiveness of team events and challenges.

People actually talk to each other too! You’d be amazed what a tough fitness challenge can do to get people top open up and start talking! At Boot Camp everyone is in the same boat, and unlike the gym, you’re not working alone. It’s like going to the gym with 15 friends. Imagine the fun you can have?

So, if you want to move your fitness forward, have fun and be a part of something that feels less solitary and confining than the gym, maybe you should give Boot Camp a try. Search online for a Boot Camp in your area, and find out what they have to offer.

Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
